The ocean defines everything on the Faroes

Faroe Islands 11

In the newest episode of the Deo Juvante travel series, we look back on our journey to the Faroe Islands, a remote archipelago in the North Atlantic located between Iceland and Norway. Made up of 18 volcanic islands and home to just over 50,000 people — and even more sheep — the Faroes are not connected by highways or sprawling cities, but by the sea. For centuries, the ocean has shaped the culture, trade, architecture and identity of the islands. For a yachting brand like Deo Juvante, built around long-term ocean living and exploration, there could hardly be a more fitting place to begin.

Life here unfolds to the rhythm of the sea. Subsea tunnels connect the islands beneath the ocean floor, ferries weave between fjords, and the weather can change dramatically within hours. Everywhere you look, the sea is present — powerful, grounding and humbling. It is a reminder that true exploration begins with understanding the places where life remains deeply connected to nature.

This journey was captured by an extraordinary team. Deo Juvante founder Thierry Verstraete led the expedition, joined by Oriana Schneps, former superyacht chief stewardess and founder of The Yacht Edit. Behind the lens were award-winning filmmakers Spartan Media Group, led by photographers and directors Ria Giatsios and Lee Milliken, alongside cinematographer Cassie O’Neil, whose documentary-style approach captures the subtle emotional moments that make a destination unforgettable.

During their stay, the team explored the islands from a base at Hotel Føroyar, overlooking the fjords above the capital Tórshavn. Days were spent driving through mountain roads and subsea tunnels, chasing the ever-changing light and weather that give the Faroes their dramatic atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the journey was a trip to Mykines, the westernmost island, where towering cliffs host thousands of puffins and breathtaking views stretch across the North Atlantic. Guided by a local expert, the team experienced the raw beauty of the landscape — a place where wind, sea and sky meet at what truly feels like the edge of the world.

The trip also offered a deeper look into Faroese culture. At Hanusarstova, hosts Harriet and John welcomed the team into their historic farmhouse for a traditional Faroese supper club experience — an evening of storytelling and cuisine deeply rooted in the land and sea. The journey continued in Tórshavn at PAZ, where innovative Nordic gastronomy transforms local ingredients — fish, foraged herbs and fermented traditions — into a modern culinary experience that reflects the islands’ landscape and heritage.

For Deo Juvante, the Faroe Islands offer more than breathtaking scenery. They represent a mindset: the understanding that the sea connects cultures, isolation builds resilience, and true luxury lies in authentic experience. Before designing yachts meant for long-term exploration, one must first understand the places where life remains defined by the ocean.

This film is only a glimpse of the Faroe Islands — a destination that ultimately has to be felt, not just seen.
